Mothers Against Drunk Driving say it's another win in the battle to get drunk drivers off the road -- Saint John president Lora Skead says new provincial regulations for drivers under 21 are hitting a key age group involved in impaired driving crashes.
 Beginning June 1st -- new drivers under 21 and those with less than three years of experience must maintain a blood alcohol level of zero percent.
 Skead tells Tide News the group is still trying to get the legal limit lowered from point-zero-eight to point-zero-five under the Criminal Code:

The new regulations for young drivers apply to residents and visitors alike who are driving motor and commercial vehicles or motorcycles.

Public health officials say our province remains swine flu free so far -- but -- Chief Medical Health Officer - Dr Eilish Cleary - says she wouldn't be surprised if a confirmed case eventually shows up in New Brunswick.
 Cleary says people are remaining calm -- and -- there hasn't been a significant increase in the numbers of people showing up at doctors' offices or clinics suspecting they have the disease. There are now 19 confirmed Canadian swine flu cases.

The clock is ticking down to tonight's deadline for filing your 2008 personal income tax return.
 You have until midnight tonight to mail or email your return -- but -- Roger Haineault  of Help For Taxes tells Tide News there are some people who have a little longer to file. Anybody who is self employeed or their spoused have until June 15 to file.

  Haineault says if you have a refund coming and are late filing -- the government won't give you a hard time -- but -- if you owe money and don't file by midnight tonight -- you will be hit with an immediate five percent late filing penalty and one percent per month there after.

The Energy and Utilities Board has released it's latest price schedule and the news is good on all fronts. A litre of self-serve is down just over a penny to 86.3 with most stations in St Stephen are selling a litre of self-serve for 87.0.

Diesel is down just over two cents at 86.2, furnace oil, like gasoline is down over a penny at 68.2 and propane tops off at 82.1 which is down percentage points. At this time last year, a litre of self-serve gasoline was selling for over $1.20.

New Rules for Provincial Drivers

Young and new drivers around the Province will have a new set of rules as of June.1st. Anyone under the age of 21 will be required to maintain a zero per cent blood alcohol level when driving. This includes drivers of cars, motorcycle and commercial vehicles. This new rule applies to residents and visitors, those who have just received their license, and anyone who has been driving for two or three years.

The new rules also include several improvements to the graduated driver's license program. They can be found at the Public Safety website.......www.gnb.ca/publicsafety.

A Warm Day Around the Region

Plenty of sunshine and warm temperatures for all to enjoy in this Province and Nova Scotia yesterday and for some, heat coming from the sun we normall don't feel until July. Many records were set including at the Fredericton Airport which hit 29.6. The Moncton Airport topped off 28.2. St. Leonard came in at 22.8 and Charlo 22.5 .

Here in St. Stephen posted a high of 31.7 ,Saint John.....18.3 was the high but not a record and Gagetown came roaring in at 29.8.

Today is the annual "Day of Mourning" to remember workers injured or killed on the job.
 Last year -- eleven people lost their lives in workplace accidents in this province while just over 12-thousand were injured.
 At noon time today the Flags here in the border town and the province will be lowered to remember the workers who lost their lives.

NB-Swine-Flu

 New Brunswick's chief medical officer of health says while a few people have displayed flu-like symptoms, there are no confirmed cases of swine flu in the province.
    Doctor Eilish Cleary says samples from just a handful of people have been sent to the national laboratory in Winnipeg.
    Cleary says those people had recently travelled to Mexico, but adds she'd be surprised not to be seeing some people sick after returning from their spring trips there.
    She says there's no pandemic, and the swine flu cases in Canada and the United States have been very mild.
    So far, the only known cases in Atlantic Canada involve four teenagers from King's-Edgehill School in Windsor, Nova Scotia.

Dope Found in Raid by RCMP

A huge haul of marijuana has been taken in by RCMP after a year long investigation. 600 plants and 20 pounds of dried bud were seized from a home on the Salmon Creek Road over the weekend. The dope was on it's way to Montreal and a man from La Belle Province and his girlfriend have been arrested.

55-year old Milan Beneda will remain locked up until a bail hearing in Sussex on Thursday. 45-year old Barbara Meres has been released with conditions. Both are facing charges of cult-ivation of marijuana as well as possession for the purpose of trafficking marijuana.

R-C-M-P planning a funeral for an un-identified baby found alongside a road in   say they're still looking for the boy's family.
    A public funeral will be held Friday for the newborn, whose body was discovered near Salisbury on April 4th.
    Since no family members have come forward to claim him, police have decided a funeral needs to be held so the child can be buried.
    The Mounties will stand in for the baby's family. 
     The baby will be buried at a cemetery near where his body was discovered.
   The Mounties haven't said if the baby was stillborn, killed after birth or abandoned while still alive.

  Meanwhile, Andrew Oland President of  Moosehead tells Tide News, in November Minister Doucett ask if there was a way they can become a part of the lobster industy.Oland says he would support in any way for the local lobster industry and the businesses:

Oland says we trust this promotion will help with the lobster sales and hoping to do more in the near future.
The promotion begins on Friday, and will be running until the end of July in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and PEI.

Charlotte county students will be presented with a some safety tips this week on how to play safe.Communtiy Program Officer Lisa Williams with the St George Detachment of the RCMP will give an hour -long presentations to children in grades two to five .
PLAYSAFE was created when the Association began to see children enrolling in CHAMP who had lost limbs in accidents that could have been prevented.The War Amps presentation will run through the entire week.

 New Laboratory At Bioligical Station

he Minister of Fisheries and Oceans Gail Shea and Minister of Veterans Affairs, Greg Thomspon announced the construction of a new wet laboratory building at the St. Andrews Biological Station .
 This project, which is expected to begin by the end of the month, will create  25 full-time jobs and maintain the equivalent of another 117."
 Work is expected to take approximately 65 weeks to complete, with all phases of modernization completed by June 2012.


 

Ribbon Cutting

There will an official ribbon cutting ceremony this fall on a new border crossing in St Stephen--- Southwest M-P Greg Thompson says the project is overdue about 30 years and goes hand in hand with another major project underway on Highway One---

Thompson says he expects to open up the new border crossing station sometime this fall, no indication of when the twinning of Highway One to Stephen will be wrapped up.

Swine Flu Being Closely Monitored in NB

Provincial public health officials say there haven't been any confirmed cases of the swine flue reported. But the province's chief medical health officer says they are closely monitoring the situation here. Public health is asking if you are sick enough to see your doctor and have just returned from Mexico or the southwestern U-S to make sure you let your doctor know. And as always -- washing your hands frequently - covering your face when coughing or sneezing - and - staying home when ill will help reduce the spread of most viruses including the swine flu.


Saint John River Reaching Flood Level in Some Areas

Riverside residents are keeping an eye to the sky and the water this weekend. Provincial emergency measures organization officials are predicting river waters will be at - or - very near flood stage in our area by tomorrow. So far - the Saint John River has spilled over its banks slightly in the Fredericton area -- but -- the water level in the capital city area is expected to begin dropping tomorrow. The good news is Environment Canada says there isn't any heavy rain in the forecast over the next couple of days.

One Mile Interchange Moves Along Smoothly

It's full steam ahead for work on the One Mile Interchange. Energy Minister Jack Keir tells CHSJ news a contract has already been awarded for ramps on the highway side and the next contract will be handed out in July. The project is designed to give truck traffic going to the industrial parks in East Saint John direct access to Bayside Drive instead of traveling through the city and around the Lower Cove Loop.

The 45 million dollar One Mile Interchange project is expected to be finished by the fall of 2011.


New Radio Station

 Our parent company - Acadia Broadcasting - is growing -- the Canadian Radio Television and Telecommunications Commission has granted Acadia the go ahead to operate a second radio station in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia.
 The new station will feature a country music format for fans in the Nova Scotia community -- and -- it should be on air by early next year.
 Acadia Broadcasting owns 98.1 The Tide , Country 94 and the Wave in Saint John and - 3 in northwestern Ontario -- the company also has an application for a station in Halifax.

Flooding across the Road in Rollingdam

With the heavy rainfall over the past couple of days Charlotte County have experienced some flooding in certain areas. Government officials in Rollingdam were out yesterday putting road signs up reminding residents to slow down when water is overflowing accross the road. The water levels should drop in some areas over the weekend with temperatures rising in the high 20's.

Diesel is actually down over two cents to land at 88.7, furnace oil drops to 69.9 which is down a penny and propane is down percentage points. coming in at 82.8.

St Stephen Council wants pay increase

The Mayor and Councillors here in St. Stephen are looking for a pay increase. There is some paper-work that has been put in motion to increase the annual amount they will receive in stipe-ends. Mayor Jed Prucell says of the seven municipalities similar to this one, St. Stephen is almost at the bottom of the pay scale.

The raise, if approved, would see the Mayor make$11,000, the Deputy Mayor is $6500 and Councillors $5500.  Council will not review another increase during this mandate which has close to another three years to go.

To  celebrate Earth Day Today and Arbor Day with the Charlotte County Chapter of the Conservation Council of New Brunswick  Tim Foulkes will be leading a hike, rain or shine, up Simpson Hill in Bayside at 6:00PM tonight.

High Speed results hits Rurals Areas in Charlotte County

High speed Internet is well on it way around the province .The Minister says the province teamed up with the service provider Barrett Xplore to build infrastructure for rural areas.  Rick Doucett tells tide news residents in Charlotte county are seeing the results of the progress.He says residents in Rollingdam and DeerIsland are noticing the difference already.

 Doucett says 90 percent of New Brunwick has high speed and they want the other 10 to be completed in the next 16 months.

Hearing postponed

19-year old Sarah Marie Russell was in St. Stephen provincial court yesterday but the hearing was postponed after her lawyer asked for more time to review Crown evidence. A date will be set next month for a preliminary  hearing. Russell has already elected trial by a judge with no jury on charges of manslaughter and being an accessory after the fact to murder.
The case was set over until May 25.

Yesterday, she elected trial by Court of Queen's Bench judge alone on a charge of concealing the dead body of a newborn. On Jan. 29, the RCMP found the body of an infant in woods  outside St. Stephen.
