Province's Population is Growing

Numbers from Stats Can show a net increase of over 6000 people since January 2007.

The number surpasses the goal of increasing the province's population by 6,000 by the end of 2009 as set out by the state of the province address.

The numbers are a quarterly estimate for January 1st to April 1st of this year and place our province's population at 751,300.

The province's population dropped by over 4000 people in the 13 quarters before January 2007

Named Released In Accident Over The Weekend In Saint John

Ryan Ellis has been identified as the man killed last Friday on the West-Side in Saint John. The 26-year old was killed when the motorcycle he was riding crashed into another vehicle on Manawagonish Road.
A 15-year-old girl was also killed over the weekend when the vehicle she was travelling in left Hillcrest Road, went down an embankment near the airport on Saturday night. Saint John City police tells us , her name is not being released at the request of her family.

What About An Oil Spill In The Bay

Fisheries Minister Rick Doucette says its time we took another look at the plans for dealing with an oil spill in the Bay of Fundy.

This follows Doucette's visit last week to the Gulf of Mexico to get a first hand look at what's unfolding there which he calls the largest manmade disaster in history.

Doucette says any re-examination of the plans that are in place should also involve officials from Nova Scotia and Maine.

People's Alliance Picks Second Candidate

John Craig, Mayor of the Town of St. Andrew's, was acclaimed as candidate at the PANB Charlotte-Campobello nomination meeting on Saturday afternoon at Scotch Ridge Hall.
Craig told those assembled that this was an exciting time for politics in New Brunswick.

Craig joins Ed Hoyt in carrying the People's Alliance banner as a choice for voters in the Sept. 27 election.

The St. Andrew's mayor added the election may only be a short time away, but he is ready for the intense ride.

NB Liquor Grand Opening

The St. Stephen NB Liquor is now officially open for business in their new location. They have moved from The St. Stephen Superstore to their new location beside Sobey's in The Charlotte Mall.

There are two way to enter the news store now one in the front and a walk way has been constructed to take you to the new store thru Sobey's. Grand opening Ceremonies got underway today at noon.

State Police have released the names of the three people stabbed to death.

They are 55 year old Jeffrey Ryan and his 10 year old son Jesse Ryan and 30 year old Jason Dehahn. The homicides took place at Ryan's house on Route 1 and detectives think the killings took place in the early morning hours of Wednesday. Dehahn was a friend of Ryan's and also lived in Amity.

A team of State Police detectives and crime lab personnel have spent the day gathering evidence from Ryan's property and conducting interviews.

Police have received some calls from the public of possible locations of Ryan's missing 1989 Ford blue and silver pickup truck , but there have been no confirmed sightings.

Province Supports Efficiency Upgrades At Blacks Harbour Fish Processor

A funding announcement today in Black Harbour at Connors, Premier Shawn Graham along with Fisheries Minister Rick Doucet were on hand to make the announcement. Doucet Tells Tide News  the government 's investment in this long standing Company not only secures it's future but that of it's workers and the surrounding communities that have relied on it for generations.
The provincial government is making an investment to help Connors Bros. complete efficiency upgrades to its processing plant by providing them with a $3-million forgivable loan as part of a $12-million project that will help maintain more than 1,000 jobs in the southwestern of the Province.

Connors Bros. is one of Canada's oldest food producers and the largest producer of canned sardines worldwide. In 2004, the operations of Connors Bros. merged with those of Bumble Bee Seafoods LLC and Clover Leaf Seafoods Co.

Official Opening of The Liberal Headquarters

The Campaign is officially underway in Charlotte County. Shawn Graham had a BBQ lunch in Town Square before walking his way up to 49 King Street and cut the ribbon to Annabelle Juneau's campaign headquarters. Graham wasted no time telling us what his government has done leading up to the Election.

Graham say as a government they have taken a number of initiatives over the past three and a half year but that was all designed to keep people in this province. The our community the Liberal government has worked to support local companies like Ganong's, SWP, Sticks and Stone as well as the Flakeboard a a number of companies to keep providing jobs for this region.

Graham tell us as the September 27th Election approaches the Liberals are making progress in Education, Health Care , infrastructure on Highways. Graham this is a riding he knows he can win.

State Police continue to investigate a homicide near Houlton in which three people have been killed, and they are looking for a pickup truck taken from one of the victims.
Police are looking for a 1989 Ford F-150 pickup truck which was missing from the homicide scene and are asking for the public's help in locating the vehicle . The truck is blue and silver with Maine license plates 4 1 5 5 R Y .

Gas Prices On The Rise

Gas prices in the area taking a jump after the weekly setting. Self serve regular has risen to 100.0 a litre, a rise of more than 3 cents and diesel is also more expensive, going up by more than 2 cents a litre. The price of propane has been pegged at 101.9. Meanwhile cross border gas is going for 78 cents a litre Canadian.

Triple Homicide & Missing Truck

State Of Maine Police are investigating a homicide near Houlton in which three people have been killed, and they are looking for a pickup truck taken from one of the victims. The deaths were discovered Wednesday night at a home along Route 1 in Amity, about 15 miles south of Houlton. The victims are two men and a young boy and detectives say all were stabbed to death. The names of the victims are being withheld as relatives are being notified.
Police are looking for a 1989 Ford F-150 pickup truck which was missing from the homicide scene and are asking for the public's help in locating the vehicle . The truck is blue and silver with Maine license plates 4 1 5 5 R Y . The truck has two different colored wheels - white in front and silver wheels in the back. It also has running lights on top of the cab, above the windshield.

Funding Announcement

Governor Mourns Loss of Soldier With Maine Ties

Governor John E. Baldacci has learned of the death of an active duty soldier with Maine ties. Sgt. Brandon Silk, 25, of Orono was killed Monday while serving with the 101st Airborne Division in Afghanistan.
Sgt. Silk was a Black Hawk crew chief, stationed in Fort Campbell, Kentucky, according to his family.

The family has asked for privacy as they cope with the loss of their son.

Governor Baldacci will order flags lowered to half-staff on the day of Sgt. Silk’s funeral.

Traffic Interruption In Saint John Today

This traffic delay shouldn't impact your commute too much but, keep it in mind.
The Department of Transportation tells traffic will stop completely on Route 1 in both directions at 2 o'clock today to conduct blasting activities.

This will occurr near the Crown Street off ramp both today and tomorrow as part of the One Mile House Interchange Project.

Serious Assault

A 31 year old man from Public Landing was severely beaten last weekend and is at the Regional Hospital in Saint John in critical condition. The RCMP in Grand Bay-Westfield are looking for help in finding those who did it. The attack took place around 9:00 Saturday night at the Public Landing Wharf. According to the Mounties, 8 or 9 men got off a 26 foot white speedboat and four or five of them carried out the beating while the others went to a nearby store. Granville Park Meeting

A Public meeting was held last night at The St. Stephen Legion for those concerned about the proposed construction at Granville park. This meeting was for a chance for those concerned about the proposed construction and the town rezoning the area for commercial use.

Mayor Jed Purcell tells Tide News he was pleased with the comments and they all will be well considered. Mayor and Council will make a motion for a second reading at Monday Night's council meeting for the re zoning on Granville Park.

SSHS Grand March & Prom

Tonight is Grand March and Prom night for the graduating students at St. Stephen High School. The Grand March will be held at the Border Arena starting at 8 o'clock followed by the Prom at the High School till Midnight.

Police will be out full force making sure everyone has a happy and safe graduation this week. But make no mistake RCMP do tell us charges will be laid for those drinking and driving and those proving liquor to minors will be fined as they enforce their Zero Tolerance policy.

New Vaccine Launched To Better Protect Young Children And Infants

Young children and infants in the Province are being offered a new publicly funded pneumococcal vaccine as part of improvements to the provincial childhood immunization program.
Health Minister Mary Schryer announced today. Invasive pneumococcal disease is a serious bacterial infection commonly associated with severe respiratory tract infections

The vaccine is publicly funded for children who are eight weeks to 12 months old and is available to children and infants, starting Thursday, July 1.

Snorkel's Birthday At Huntsman Marine Science Center

The Huntsman Marine Science Centre is holding a celebration at the aquarium for the star attraction, Snorkel.
The fun starts at 11 a.m., when Snorkel will hopefully blow out a candle, Snorkel will do some of his tricks at the seal feeding, and then there’ll be cake, games, and more fun, for humans. Last year’s party was a lot of fun for all concerned, and Snorkel even received some gifts.

Snorkel, and his dad, Loki, have been big hits since their introduction to the aquarium in May, 2009. Loki was born at the Huntsman in 1996, and Snorkel was born at Storybook Gardens in London, Ontario.

The Huntsman aquarium has lowered admission prices in 2010 as construction continues on the new discovery centre, set to open in June, 2011.

St. Stephen Graduation Banquet Tonight

Members of SSHS's senior class will be attending their banquet tonight as many get set to graduate this week. 

The night will start off with the meal as young men and women finish up members of the school will be handing out awards....All Graduation ceremonies for Saint Andrews this year will be held this Friday..

RCMP Member Bob MacKnight tells Tide News they will be out about enforcing their zero tolerance policy for drug and alcohol and looking for those who are driving aggressive.
