Tide News has obtained a document which tells us who the new superintendent of school district ten is going to be. Derek O’Brien has accepted the position and will begin his new duties at the end of the month. O’Brien is currently the principal of St. Stephen Elementary School.
Colleen Winchester will take over his duties as acting principal until the position is advertised for a full time replacement.

Civic Center Project
St Stephen Town officials are busy crossing there T's and dotting there I's with the construction of the Charlotte County Civic Center project. CEO John Furgeson tells tide news there are some steps to follow before they begin construction. He says there is a point of transition that has to occur in any major project and a part of the transition is to confirm everything to date and then to make sure the proper oversite and accountability is there from start to finish.
This phase of the project is costing $31,000.00 as still no word on when construction will get started.

Canada-Mexico Meetings
For the first time since it's inception back in 1975, the Congress of the Union of the United Mexican States will meet outside of Ottawa. The two day conference gets started today in Saint John and MP Rodney Weston tells us, Senator Noel Kinsella played a huge role in making this happen.
Both delegations will be made up of 35 members and will wrap up tomorrow afternoon at 5:30pm.

Gas Prices Fall
The Energy and Utilities Board has released it's weekly price schedule which shows the price of gasoline down by close to two cents. Most stations in St Stephen are selling a litre of self-serve for 99.2 cents.
Diesel comes in at $102.6, Furnace Oil is down close to two cents as well at an even 84 cents and propane is at 92.6 cents a litre.

No New Gas Prices Today
If your checking out the sign at your local gas station this morning wondering where the price of fuel stands, don't bother. Due to the holiday yesterday, the Energy and Utilities Board will not let us know if the price for gasoline, furnace oil, propane and diesel is going up or down until tomorrow.
EUB officials tell us wholesalers will be notified of the price changes later today. The price for a litre of self-serve fuel is selling for just over a loonie in St Stephen.

Saint John M-P Agrees with Minister

Jack Keir's request isn't falling on deaf ears. Saint John MP Rodney Weston tells us, he and the Energy Minister are on the same page when it comes to this topic.
Weston adds this is something that needs to be dealt with by the people that know best like the people who put this contract together.
Province Can't Take All the Blame for Point Lepreau Refurbishment Cost

If the proposed deal between NB Power and Hydro Quebec goes through there could be some energy rate increases during year six. That according to energy minister Jack Keir--- who says the replacement fuel costs at Point Lepreau may increase energy rates after the 5 year freeze. Keir says Atomic Energy of Canada and Ottawa need to take responsibility for some of the cost. He adds AECL has said the project schedule was too optimistic, there wasn't enough prep work done and hindsight is 20/20:
As of right now the refurbishment is 18 months behind schedule.
Remembrance Day
Veterans from coast to coast will take time today to remember the sacrifice paid by them and those who never made it home. It's Rememberance day and ceremonies will take place in all communities across the province. Lloyd Marshall served in the second world war between 1943 and 45 and tells us, his tour included France, Italy, Germany, Belgium and Holland.

Lobster Season Starts Tuesday
The fall Lobster season begins on Tuesday with 308 boats ready to set sail.
Local fishermen make approximately 35 per cent of their income in the first week of the season.
The season continues until January 15th but, most fishermen finish up by the Holidays.
The fleet sets sail from 22 fishing wharves from St. Martins to Seal Cove on Grand Manan Island on Tuesday at 6am. The fishing communities are not all small coastal villages, Saint John is home to 13 lobster boats.

The manager of a major salmon hatchery near St Stephen says he's not worried about the threat of the H-1-N-1 flu.
Brian Donnelly of Cooke Aquaculture says he doesn't think it poses any danger to his valuable salmon stock -- he says he's not aware of warm blooded pathogens mixing with cold blooded species and Donnelly says the hatchery has a very strict disinfection program in place a 13-year old cat in the U-S was confirmed having the H-1-N-1 virus earlier this week.

Students Staying Home From School
Spokesperson with the Education Department says the students that are out of class province wide is at 18%. Valerie Kilfoil tells tide news some schools in different areas may be higher then others. She says as for District Ten she could not give the status of the students that are out of class at this time. Yesterday Acting Superintendent Jenny McDougal told us at the moment attendance figures are actually better then they were during the same period last year.
Police Cruiser Lost Control Trying To Avoid A Moose
One man is lucky to be alive after his car rolled over several times to avoid hitting a moose. Deputy Tom Chambers of Calais was answering to a complaint when he suddenly lost control of his car trying to miss hitting the animal. Sheriff Donnie Smith tells Tide news chambers had been in the car for over an hour before emergency officials were able to remove him. The Sheriff says he was transported to Calais hospital then later transported to eastern Maine medical center. He says the accident happen around 6:00 last evening when he was travelling east on route 214. Smith says he is recovering well.

High speed internet continues to make its way throughout the province as part of a government contract to bring access to all New Brunswickers by July 2010. Barrett Xplore Inc says the most recent area to get wireless and satellite technology is the Hampton region.

Shooting In Fort Hood Texas
U-S President Barack Obama says a deadly shooting at a U-S Army base in Texas is ``a horrific outburst of violence.'' Speaking at an event at the Department of Interior, Obama says it's ``horrifying'' that brave American troops have been targeted.
The U-S Army says 12 people were killed and 31 wounded at the Army base at Fort Hood, Texas. The suspect was wounded and remains in stable condition.

Maine on Power Deal
The Governor's Office in Maine is taking a wait and see approach towards the possible sale of NB Power to Hydro Quebec.Karin Tilburg is Senior Policy Advisor to Governor John Baldacci.

Gas Prices Down Slightly
The Energy and Utilities Board has set the maximum pump price for regular self-serve today at a dollar-point-five--which is down a penny from yesterday. Gas stations in St Stephen are showing a pump price of 101.2
Diesel has dropped a half of a penny to land at 103.2 and furnace oil has fallen to 84.9 cents a litre. The price of propane has gone up more than a cent to 92.1.

New Highway Opening In November
Some confusion over when the new border crossing will open has been circulating around the area. Callers to our 466-2222 new lines have been asking when this will happen. Department of Transportation spokesperson Andrew Holland Tells tide news the new border crossing from St Stephen to Calais, will be opening soon but an exact date is not known.

Premier Says Canada Will Benefit From New Border Crossing
Premier Shawn Graham says the construction of the new bridge and the twinning of the new highway will benefit the community and the country.
Graham says there is allot of stimulus here in the economy over the next decade and it is being driven by both levels of government working together. The D-O-T has not confirmed the exact date on when traffic will be flowing from both sides of the border at the new border crossing.

Students Should Stay In School If They Are Not Sick Says The Health Minister
Health Minister Mary Schryer says information on when the next batch of H1N1 vaccine heading to the province should be known by this morning .Schryer says the Health Department is expecting it to be a lot.
Schryer says parents should be sending their children to school, unless they are actually sick. She says she can emphasize with parents who have pulled their kids from class, but the best option is to send them to school as usual.
