Alwards Promise To Remove Toll On Grand Manan Ferry

Progressive Conservative party leader David Alward making a promise to the residents of Grand Manan today as a part of his party's platform.

Alward tells Tide News he is promising to remove the toll on the ferry to Grand Manan Island if they are elected next month. He's also committed to retaining the current ferry operating schedule.

Over the past few decades, the population of Grand Manan has declined year after year and many island residents have been complaining for years that the cost to take the ferry has made it difficult for them financially.

Attempted Assault On Premier Graham

A local man has a date set for court after an incident yesterday that landing him in the back of a police car.
Phillip Williams of Upper Mills has been charged with uttering threats and resisting arrested after he showed up at Town Square where Premier Shawn Graham was set to make an announcement.

Corp. Davis Tells Tide News they were tipped off by a phone call prior to yesterday events that lead to Williams actions.

Williams tells Tide news he wanted to speak directly to The Premier about his issues concerning his land, welfare and medical documents. Williams has a court date set for September 3 to answer to charges.

Kingston Man Found

The search for a missing senior from the Kingston Peninsula has a happy ending. Hampton RCMP tell us the search for 63-year old Fred Drew has been called off after he was picked up near his home by a relative last night.
Drew had been missing since yesterday when he left for his daily walk. Concern was raised because Drew is an insulin dependent diabetic but RCMP say he will be fine.

Williams to Appear in Court

A court date has been set for a local man after an incident in town square involving the Premier. Phillip Williams says he was driven by anger in getting help about losing his land along with his medical records being withheld by his previous doctor.

He Tells Tide News he went to Town Square to speak with The Premier about his issues. The Premier’s speech was delayed fifteen minutes after the RCMP received a tip that a man was looking for Graham.

Williams was arrested before the Premier’s arrival and has a September 3rd court date to answer to charges of uttering threats and resisting arrest.

Tide news has placed a call to the RCMP for their comment and have yet to hear back.

New Board Members At The Airport

Two new board members have been selected to sit at the Saint John Airport. Michael Walton and former Saint John mayor Norm McFarlane begin their terms right away.

Walton has held numerous positions with community boards and is a long time member of the Board of Trade.

Along with holding the title of the Mayor of Saint John, McFarlane is as former MLA, cabinet minister and accountant.

Missing Man From Kingston Peninsula

The search is on for a missing senior from the Kingston Peninsula.  Hampton RCMP tell us 62-year old Fred Drew has been gone since yesterday when he left for his daily walk.

He is five seven, 300 pounds white hair and a short beard. He was wearing a beige long sleeve shirt, jeans and white sneakers.

Drew is also an insulin dependent diabetic and officers don't know if he took his medication before leaving for his walk.

Gas Prices In St. Stephen

Your trip to the gas pump won't hurt as much today.

The price of gas is down this morning after the weekly setting, the maximum price for regular self-serve is 95.4.   Diesel is also down at 103.0 while the cost of propane is up slightly to 102.8.

The price for home heating oil is selling for 86.7

Stolen Truck In St. George

RCMP are investigatingafter a pickup truck was stolen sometime between late Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning from Brunswick Street in St. George

Police say the 2005 Ford F-650 truck was stolen from a parking lot. The truck is white and black in color and has white mud flaps on it with the wording "Gator Ford Florida." The New Brunswick license plate is F-18256.

Minimum Wage Set To Rise

Our minimum wage will be boosted by 50 cents September 1st. That will bring the pay rate to nine dollars an hour.

Two more 50-cent increases are scheduled for next year to bring the minimum wage up to the Atlantic average of 10-dollars an hour by next fall.

St Stephen & Charlotte County Go High Speed

Rogers Communications announced today St. Stephen and surounding area of Charlotte County will recieved new enhanced television service as well as news services for high speed internet and home phone services.

Locals in the area will now recieve up to 450 new channels with over 1000 on demand movies. Rogers is offering sic levels of hi speed service and residental home phone service with unlimited local calling thru New Brunswick.

 Rogers will be hosting an open house today in St. Stephen at The St. Stephen Legion from 12 to 7 and tomorrow from 12 to 7 at The Saint Andrews Legion.

RCMP Request Public Assistance

RCMP are requesting help from the public in identifying those responsible for the theft of a 1998 4 wheel ATV from School Street in St Stephen. It happened between August 15 and 17th.

Police have secured evidence from the scene and will be examined by the RCMP Forensic Identification Section. Anyone with info leading to the arrest of those responsible may be eligible for a cash award.

Anterless Deer Draw

Almost 5000 hunters around the Province have been given the green light to hunt anter-less deer this fall. Anyone who has been awarded a validation sticker should receive it from the Province by the end of next month.
You can find out if you've been successful in the draw by visiting gnb.ca or checking the last two digits of your current hunting license against the two-digit numbers listed for the wildlife management zone in which you applied.

With the tab growing at one million dollars a day for replacement power at Point Lepreau, the Energy Minister says negotiations with Ottawa continue to pick up the tab for replacement power. Jack Keir tells us, he met with MP Keith Ashfield late Friday night and Ottawa is still reviewing the file:

Hampton RCMP say they were called to the Midland area last night to find a 63-year old man out for a run as naked as the day he came into the world.
As you can guess, officers tell us the man was drinking . No charges will be laid.

A warning from the President of Credit Counselling Services of Atlantic Canada on choosing an agency.

John Eisner tells us there are some companies making claims right now they can't back up.

He says some agencies are promising to cut interest rates before even looking into a client's financial situation.

Eisner warns about one agency that is calling homes of people who are not having financial problems and he says they have made a complaint about it.

Man Found In Rubble Of Home

53-year old James Harvey Goddard has been found in the rubble of what used to be a home in Sussex Corner.

The body was found late yesterday afternoon after the home was destroyed by an explosion Friday night just after six o'clock.

A 51-year old woman who escaped the blast has been released from hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.

The quiet neighbourhood was rocked when a huge explosion demolished the home which was for sale.

Residents we spoke with in the area of the house tell us Goddard was an explosive expert who worked in the mines in both Pennobsquis and Sussex.

RCMP still don't know what caused the explosion.

Community Marches For Gay Pride

Fans, friends and family that support the City's gay community will be out in force for the Pride parade today.

Mack Mackenzie of Port City Rainbow Pride says many of the candidates running in the fall election are taking part this year.

He tells CHSJ News it's not too late to take part.

Parade participants are asked to gather in Queen's Square at two this afternoon with the parade starting at 3.

The parade route is Queen Square to Sydney Street to King Square down King Street up St. Patrick Street across the viaduct and end on Main Street in the North End.

NB Business Hall Of Fame Gets Four Inductees

Four business leaders have been named to the Province's Business Hall of Fame.

The 2010 inductees are Former Premier Frank McKenna, Bill and Ed Barrett and Jean-Claude Savoie.

Bill and Ed Barrett are Co-CEOs of Barrett Corporation while Jean-Claude Savoie is the President of a hardwood processing company.

All four will be inducted into the Business Hall of Fame at the gala dinner in November at the Trade and Convention Centre.

Sussex Home Flattened In Explosion

One man is missing and a 51-year old woman is recovering in hospital after a home in Sussex Corner has been destroyed by an explosion.

Emergency crews were called to the home on the Post Road just after six o'clock to find it flattened.

RCMP Sargeant Bruce Reid tells CHSJ News, they continue to interview people who were in the area when the explosion happened.

Crews were on the scene until after midnight and the fire marshall will inspect the area to try and piece together what triggered the explosion today.

Neighbours are still in shock and waiting to find out what rocked their homes.

Melanie Hawthorne lives around the corner from where the home was destroyed and tells CHSJ News, the explosion was heard miles from her front door.

Hawthorne tells CHSJ News, the owner of the destroyed home is Harvey Goddard who works with explosives for a living at the mines in Sussex and Pennobsquis but has had the home up for sale.

Save Passamaquoddy Bay Maintains Calais LNG Fails State Permitting Threshold

The Maine Board of Environmental Protection  granted Calais LNG an additional delay in the permitting process.

In response, Save Passamaquoddy Bay researcher Robert Godfrey tells us they continue to believe that Calais LNG, by its own admission in multiple filings to the State of Maine, has not adequately completed its permit applications and cannot demonstrate financial capacity that is a legal prerequisite for state environmental permitting.

St. Stephen Native Releases Book

St. Stephen native Larry Crompton has released a new book about his hunt for the elusive California Serial Killer known as "The Original Night Stalker". Both Larry and his wife Barbara are St. Stephen natives with friends and neighbors still in the vicinity.

The book tells a story the crimes of California’s Most Prolificerial Offender- the East Area Rapist/ The Original Night Stalker.

Although the hunt still continues, the results remain the same; no closure. Larry Crompton wrote this book.

Doucet Refutes MLA's Claim On Church Suppers

Fisheries Minister and Charlotte the Isles MLA Rick Doucet is refuting a Conservative MLA's claim that new health rules could spell the end of church suppers in the province.

Wayne Steeves, the Conservative M-L-A for Albert says the Liberals are waiting until after the election to bring the new regulations into being.

Doucet tells Tide News there is absolutely no truth to this.

He says it's irresponsible and misleading and calls this move typical of the Conservatives.

Meanwhile, The Province's Chief Medical Officer of Health says there are no plans to prevent churches from holding suppers.

Dr. Eilish Cleary tells us safety procedures need to be followed closely at these events. Cleary says these suppers are good for public health

Ganong Elected Chair Of NBBC

David Ganong has been elected Chair of the New Brunswick Business Council. Ganong is replacing Derek Oland of Moosehead Breweries.
In a release, Ganong says he is focused on areas of concern including a 'greying' population putting more pressure on us to grow a skilled population to offset lower tax revenues and higher health costs.

He also says despite good efforts the province continues to depend on Ottawa's transfer payments for over 40% of its public spending leaving us vulnerable to economic downturns or changes in the revenue sharing formula in the Canadian Federation.

RCMP Alert Public of Scam

Local RCMP have received several complaints, in the past few days that locals are receiving calls from someone claiming to be working for a communications company. During the course of the conversations, the caller requests a Social Insurance Number. This is an obvious attempt to collect and unlawfully use personal information. Everyone is reminded to be cautious with callers requesting personal information/identification. If it sounds too good to be true - It probably is.

Peewee AAA Hockey Team Starting In Charlotte County

Charlotte County communities have recently been given an opportunity to start a Peewee AAA hockey team starting this fall of 2010.
The EDZA (Elite Draw Zone Area) committee, who is the governing body that looks after all elite AAA hockey in New Brunswick, has expanded the number of Peewee AAA teams in the province from 11 to 23, because of this Charlotte County has been designated as an area that will host one of these expansion teams. Jeff Dempsey has been named head coach of this new team.

There will be six AAA teams in our district . In addition teams will see an average of 3-4 hours of ice per week, allowing players to develop individual and team skills necessary to play a fast exciting level of hockey. Practices and games will be held at arenas from our three Charlotte County associations, Black’s Harbour, St. Andrews and St. Stephen allowing all communities to share a commitment to our young athletes.

This fall will be the first time our new team hits the ice and preparations are being made to make this happen. Commitments to the team coaching and managerial staff have been made from all three hockey associations, providing staff representation from New River Beach to Washington County Maine.

The team name (Charlotte County Riptide) and jersey colours have been selected and a team logo has been designed by a local artist that incorporates elements of our common coastal heritage .

The EDZA committee is holding an NB AAA Hockey information event on August 15 2:00pm at Simonds High School in Saint John to provide information about peewee, bantam and midget AAA programs .

NB EMS To Issue Requests For Proposals For New Ambulance Stations

NB EMS have announced they have made a requests for proposals to construction a new ambulance stations in Lepreau along with Dalhousie, Hillsborough, and Hartland.

The Lepreau Station will be a one Bay Station along with Hartland and Hillsborough while the Dalhousie station will be a two bay ambulance station.

Progressive Conservative candidate for Charlotte-the-Isles, Sharon Tucker, is furious at the government’s inaction in dealing with the impending closure of the St. George Food Bank and tells us if she's elected MLA for this riding, this injustice will not happen, and that she will work with the people of the riding to address this issue and fix it immediately.

The last time that the province’s food banks received an increase in funding was under the former PC government in 2005, who pledged an increase of two per cent for three consecutive years.

Provincial Energy Minister Says Ottawa Is Listening To Idea Of Mediation On Lepreau

With the Point Lepreau refurbishment delayed by at least another year, the Province is looking at mediation to determine who is going pay for the cost overruns.

Energy Minister Jack Keir says they want Ottawa to appoint a mediator to look at the contract to find a way to lessen the burden on provincal taxpayers.

Keir says the Federal Government are listening to them on this idea of mediation.

The Eastport Pirate Festival is seeking entrants from Maine, New Brunswick and beyond for the first International Lobster Boat Race to be held in the waters off Eastport on Sunday, September 12 as part of the 5th Annual Eastport Pirate Festival.

The Eastport Pirate Festival Lobster Boat Race will have multiple categories for Race Day on Sunday, September 12th. Every Boat that enters will have a shot at the $1000.00 Grand Prize. Each race category will offer a prize of either cash or product and all entrants will go into the drawing for the $1000.00.

 The grand finale will be for the title of Fastest Boat In The World to be determined in the USA vs. Canada Race. That race also comes with a $1000 cash prize. The Race Committee is seeking working boats of all kinds, as well as pleasure boats.

The 10 sanctioned races on the Coast of Maine have as many 35 races in a day in as many categories. The Eastport Pirate Festival Lobster Boat Race will have about 12 race categories to cover all boats that enter. There is a $20.00 entry fee.

Musquash Accidents

The volunteer firefighters in Musquash responding to a pair of serious accidents. Shortly after 4 in the morning, a car overturned on Highway One near the Gilmore Subdivision. The driver managed to get out of the car on her steam and appeared to be unhurt.

She was taken to hospital to be checked out. Around 10:30 last night, a car struck a moose on Highway One near Mink Brook Road. The car left the highway and was discovered upright in the bushes. The driver was rushed to hospital by ambulance.

 In between, they also had to lend some help to a boater who got stranded in the East Branch Musquash River because of mechanical problems.

 
 
 
 
 

Graham Wants Mount Carleton As National Park

Premier Shawn Graham is pressing Ottawa to designate Mount Carleton as a national park.

Graham and Tourism and Parks Minister Brian Kenny hiked up the mountain yesterday as part of the 75th anniversary of New Brunswick's provincial parks.

Graham says making Mount Carleton a national park would give Parks Canada more of a presence in Atlantic Canada.

Mount Carleton is the highest point in the Maritimes and the province has spent 2.5 million dollars on upgrades to the park since 2008.

Bridge Open Again

Commuters and summer travellers can breath a sigh in Fredericton now that the Princess Margaret Bridge is open again.

The city challenged commuters to use alternate modes of transportation during the close, in hopes more people would embrace car-pooling, biking and walking.

While the bridge is now open, the area around it remains a construction site so a speed reduction is in place on the bridge until late fall.

Facebook Helps New Amber Alert Program

More than 14-thousand people in the province have signed up to get online alerts when a child is abducted.

This after the Amber Alert Program was launched late last month with the help of the social networking site Facebook.

Amber Alert coordinator, Corporal Todd Chadwick of the Miramichi police, says he's pleased with the response.

Chadwick says while the Amber Alert program in New Brunswick has yet to be used, the chance of finding an abducted child increases with each person who joins the Facebook group.

More Delays At Point Lepreau

The refurbishment of the Point Lepreau nuclear power plant is delayed by at least another year, putting the project 2 1/2 years behind schedule.

The latest delay today is caused by problems sealing the ends of tubes inside the reactor.

Energy Minister Jack Keir tells us he wants an independent mediation process with Ottawa to examine the contract and decide who pays for the cost overruns. 

He says of the 380 tubes-- 80 failed the pressure test, 80 passed and 220 haven't been tested yet.

Retired Senator Receives Award

A retired Senator from the province is travelling to Hartford this weekend to get an award for her efforts in promoting local adoption.

Erminie Cohen tells us the award is from the North American Council on Adoptable Children.

Cohen heads the province's Adoption Foundation that has helped over 800 children in the province find families.

Candidate Upset With Closure Of Food Bank

Sharon Tucker, the Conservative candidate running in the riding of Charlotte-the-Isles, is furious that the Liberal government is ignoring the closure of the St. George food bank.

She says MLA Rick Doucet's suggestion of hosting a forum to promote donations is not enough.

Tucker is promising to immediately fix the issue if elected in the September provincial election.

RCMP Seize Drugs & Cash In Blacks Harbour

RCMP making quite a find yesterday after conducting a search warrant on a home in Blacks Harbour.
Police seized a quantity of marijuana which could have potentially produced an excess of 5000 joints. They also seized drug paraphernalia and over $4000 in cash.

A 33-year-old-man and a 39-year-old woman were arrested and later released.

The warrant was executed as a result of several weeks of investigation into drug trade activities.

They will be appearing in court at a later date to face drug trafficking charges.

Newcomb Cuts hair For Charity

One little girl with a big heart did a big thing today.Kneviah Newcomb cut her hair today to donate it Angel Hair for Kids Foundation. She's originally St. Stephen but now lives in Eastport Maine.

Newcomb is only ten old and tells Tide News she was inspired by a friend in the past who had cancer and at that time offered her hair.

Since then kneviah has only received trims to her hair and has grown it long and today with the help of Tammy Mersereau from Talk Of The Town in St. Stephen Newcomb cut her hair and will donate about 12 inches to the foundation.

In addition this ten year old girl has managed to also raise just over $400.00 dollars to send to the Angel Hair for kids foundation. It takes about 10 hair cuts to make one wig for a child in need.

Canadian Navy Makes Presentation To Mayor Of St. Stephen

The Canadian Navy celebrating it's 2010 Anniversary has launched an iniative to honour 320 towns and cities who's names have been shared with Canadian war ships and submarines since 1910.

St. Stephen was among the stop this morning as Navy Officials presented Mayor Jed Purcell with two framed pictures of the warships HMCS St. Stephen and HMCS Milltown ...

HMCS Milltown was a Bangor class minesweepers and it was used in 1943 in Canadain Waters and HMCS St. Stephen was the only vessells named St. Stephen in the Canadian Navy and was used in 1944.

Moncton RCMP Investigate Court house Vandalism

RCMP are investigating after vandals caused an estimated $10,000 in damage at the construction site of a new Moncton courthouse.

In a statement released by police they say cabinets and paint that were thrown off the roof landed on heavy machinery causing extensive damage.

Work crew's arrived Tuesday morning to find a broken window and graffiti painted on the interior and exterior walls of the building.

Apple Auto Glass Helps Youth Prepare for the Labour Market

Apple Auto Glass along with The Government of Canada will provide job preparation training and work experience to our local youth. The Honourable Greg Thompson, Member of Parliament for New Brunswick Southwest, made the announcement on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development.

Apple Auto Glass will receive just over $10,000 in federal Skills Link funding to support its youth employment program.

Skills Link focuses on helping youth facing barriers to employment, such as single parents, Aboriginal youth, young persons with disabilities, recent immigrants, youth living in rural and remote areas, and youth who have dropped out of high school.

Troy Weeks, co-owner of Apple Auto Glass Oak Bay said this is a good opportunity for our youth, and we hope that other employers will see the benefits and support this program.

The federal government is working with the provinces and territories, community organizations and other stakeholders to provide Canadians with the training, skills and opportunities they need to get jobs and contribute to their communities.

Garbage Causing Problems In Our Waters

After looking at beaches from St. Andrews to Saint John, the province's Conservation Council is worried about litter and garbage appearing along the shorelines.

David Thompson with the Conservation Council says they're still finding a lot of Styrofoam floating around as wells as plastic bags and wrappers.

Thompson says when birds and fish see small pieces of rope or Styrofoam, they mistake it for jellyfish and end up eating it.

Thompson says the material they are finding comes from fishing boats, smaller commercial vessels, illegal dumping, and material that is just blown around.

The 37th Annual International Homecoming Festival continues in St. Stephen & Calais today with the International Lumberjack Competition.  20 lumberjacks and lumberjills were competing for cash prizes and trophies.  Hundreds of spectatiors came out and cheered on the contestants.

Iggy Speaks On Lepreau Refurbishment

A crowd of people turned up to watch Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff roll into town on the Liberal Express.

Ignatieff was in Rothesay last night for a barbecue at former MP Paul Zed's house.

He spoke about his stance on the Point Lepreau refurbishments, saying his focus as a federal politician is that Stephen Harper has walked away from the Canadian nuclear industry for the past four years. 

Ignatieff says we need to make sure we have nuclear technologies and the capacity to repair our nuclear stations. 

He says we're losing nuclear scientists almost daily now, and the responsibility for that is ultimately not with AECL, but with the Conservative government.

Fewer Forest Fires

The number of forest fires around the Province are way down this year and that might come as a surprise to many with the all the hot, humid weather.

So far, there have been 120 fires which have burned 110 hectares.

Jeff Betts is the Provincial Fire Center Operations Officer and tells us, it doesn't seem like it, but the rain is spaced out enough that the woods are not tinder dry and campers are being very cautious to extinguish any fires before leaving their site.

Betts says last year, 230 hectares of forest was lost around the Province which is also low with the ten year average being close to 400.

New Event For Chocolate Fest

Area Teens will think there is definetly a sweet new event added to Chocolate Fest this year.

Call For More Diversity On EUB

An anti-poverty group would like to see even more change with the Energy and Utilities Board than what has been proposed by Provincial Energy Minister Jack Keir.

Bethany Thorne Dykstra of Voice of Real Poverty tells us members of the Board should be elected instead of appointed.

She would like to see representation on the E-U-B from someone who can speak up for the interests of consumers, especially those who don't have a lot of money to work with.

Liberal Party Leader Michael Ignatieff continues his cross province tour this weekend with a stop-over in Rothesay today.

Former Saint John MP Paul Zed is hosting the get-together at his home and tells us he expects there will be several hundred people on hand to greet Ignatieff when he arrives.

Zed points out this is Ignatieff's fifth trip to Saint John and there is no political agenda, just a chance to come and have a more relaxed visit to the area.

Mayor Holds Riding Rally

Mayor of Blacks Harbour Terry James will be holding her first riding rally to be held at the Eastern Charlotte Lion’s Club in Pennfield today between 2 and 5.

James tells Tide News she's up for the challenge and she's up against our current MLA Rick Doucet and Mayor of St. George Sharon Tucker.

Tide news asked James how she felt running against them as she has built a different relationship with them in the past as the Mayor of Blacks Harbour.

She says she has the utmost respect for both of them and she's hoping they have equal respect for her.

PANB Leader Kris Austin will be on hand today to show his support for James. The People’s Alliance of New Brunswick is the newest official political party in New Brunswick.

New Flavour Doing Well

Something that certainly goes well with a sunny long weekend is a cold beer.

Joel Levesque is Vice President of Communications with Moosehead Breweries and tells us since launching their newest summer flavour -Moose Light Blackberry- at the end of June, sales have been great.

He says they've achieved their sales objectives and they're getting great feedback about it.

Levesque says the Moose Light Blackberry might be back next summer, or they might have a new flavour because consumers seem to be really interested in experimenting and product innovation.

Bay Of Fundy At Risk

A St. Andrews marine biologist says the Bay of Fundy remains a resource at risk.

Jamie Steele tells us the bay's fragile ecosystem is linked to influences around it.

Steele says even though we strive for a balance between uses such as shipping or tourism -- we usually go too far the other way and have to backtrack to repair any damage to the ecosystem.

But -- Steele says talk of tidal power generators in the bay is miles ahead of past suggestions of large damns to harness the tides which would have a significant impact on the bay's marine life.

He says we have to become more aware of our own backyard and how we influence what happens in it.

Nature Trust Cleans Beaches

The Nature Trust of New Brunswick is making an effort to clean up the beaches in Bocabec Bay near St. Andrews today.

The stretch of shoreline was chosen for this year's Charlotte Isles clean-up and Executive Director Renata Woodward tells us they normally collect just over one ton of garbage.

Woodward says they see a lot of commercial bins, plastic containers and oil containers that get washed in from the ocean.

She says the goal is to get people involved in land conservation and land stewardship.

Arson Cause Of Early Morning Fire In Saint John

The cause of a fire early this morning in the north end of Saint John was arson. The Major Crime Unit along with fire investigators are trying to find who deliberately set it. The fire broke out around 3:30 in a two and a half storey wooden building that was empty on Douglas Avenue at Main Street.

Police say there were no injuries.

New stats from RCMP prove what some have been preaching for a long time.....seatbelts save lives. Officers tell us 90% of drivers in the Province buckle up before starting their vehicle but the 10% who don't account for 44% of those killed on Provincial Highways.

No matter what you have planned for this Long Weekend, if it involves driving, RCMP remind everyone to buckle up as they will be conducting check-stops all weekend.

Huntman Marine Science Center At Halfway Point

It's officially at the half way mark with the concrete hitting the ground this week for the New Huntsman Marine Science Centre.
‘Seal the Deal’ campaign was launched in October of last year to raise the remaining $2 million it needed to complete the new Discovery Centre, which will cost $8 million to complete.

 One million already raised, and $2.5 million from both the provincial and federal governments, the target was to reach $2 million before the doors to the new facility open in June 2011.

The new centre, complete with aquarium, 226-seat theatre, wet lab, and conference rooms will be open year-round. Plans for the new building are on show at the temporary aquarium, which is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Huntsman this year.

Gas Prices Up And Down

Self serve regular has gone up by a cent a litre after the weekly setting while diesel has gone down slightly by under a cent to a dollar point six a litre. Propane remains at 99.6 cents.

Meanwhile if your headed to Calais gas will only cost you 78 per litre Canadian today.

Mayor of Blacks Harbour Terry James has confirmed she is running as an official candidate for People’s Alliance of New Brunswick . James will be holding her first riding rally to be held at the Eastern Charlotte Lion’s Club in Pennfield this Saturday, July 31st between 2 and 5 pm.
James tells Tide News she will represent on behalf of the people wheater it is jobs, education, health care, ferry service, property taxes, or rural issues. James says she's intend's to win a seat in the New Brunswick Legislature.

Earthquake Felt off Waters Outside Of Saint Andrews and Grand Manan

A small earthquake occurred offshore, close to Grand Manan Island, and about 75 from Saint Andrews and 56 kms East of Machias.

There are no reports of damage but those in the area say they heard and felt it. It registered as a 3.2 Quake. It struck around 3:30 Sunday.

New Radio Station For Nova Scotia

Country music and up to date news is being enjoyed on the south shore of Nova Scotia at 100.7 CKHJ Hank FM.

The new radio station is up and running and is owned and operated by Acadia Broadcasting which also owns 98.1 The Tide, Country 94 and sister station 97.3 the Wave.

Company Vice-President Jim MacMullin says it is exciting to launch our new ststaion after two years of planning, approvals and construction.

Hank Fm is sharing broadcasting space with it's sister station, CKBW.

The launch of the new station coincides with another exciting event for the Bridgewater stations a move into new state of the art studios anmd offices.

Doucet Announces $1.5 million In Infrastructure Projects

The MLA for Charlotte-the Isles tells Tide News work begins Tuesday near Back Bay as the Province is investing more than $120,000 for replacing of a cross culvert on the Back Bay Loop Road.
The project will take up to three weeks and the road will be closed to thru traffic. Where the culvert is in the middle of the loop, residents should turn around and go back the same way they entered the road.

Doucet also announced a tender award, valued at $422,000 for paving through the Department of Transportation’s designated highways program for paving Route 172 Fundy Bay Drive from Mount Pleasant Road to Salar Court and Letete Road from Main Street to Mount Pleasant Road.

Bike accident Over The Weekend

The Harvey Volunteer Fire Department responded to a motor vehicle accident between a motorcycle and a delivery truck over to end out last week. The accident happened just outside of Harvey Station. The motorcycle travelling with a group of 4 motorcyclists going towards St. Andrews crossed the path of the lead bike in the group and the bike and driver struck the side of the truck.

The driver of the motorcycle was rushed to Fredericton by ambulance and later transferred to Saint John. RCMP accident reconstruction team investigated the cause of the accident.

MaxMillion Dollor Ticket Sold In St. Stephen

Lotto officials say an Atlantic 49 ticket sold in the province for Saturday's draw is worth amillion bucks.

The winning ticket was sold in St. Stephen. Atlantic Lottery officials say another ticket worth that amount was sold in Fredericton.

It was one of the MaxMillions that were drawn in the LottoMax lottery on Friday.

The winner has yet to step forward.

Facebook users can sign up for AMBER alerts directly in their new feeds.
Amber alerts provide the public with info that can help locate an abducted child. Corporal Todd Chadwick is the Provincial Coordinator for AMBER Alert says this Facebook page is set up differently.

Jack Irving's Visitation

A large turnout is expected as people pay their respects to the late Jack Irving who died earlier this week. Visitation is from 2 this afternoon until 8 tonight at Trinity Anglican Church on Charlotte Street with the funeral service scheduled tomorrow morning at 11:00.

False Abduction In Memramcook

Police has found out the report of attempted abduction made a 10-year-old girl in Memramcook is false.
After she was being interviewed by RCMP investigators, she admitted she made up the incident.

Police tells us because of the age of the girl no charges are being considered.

RCMP are investigating the attempted abduction of a 10-year-old girl in southeastern part of the Province. They Tell us it happened mid afternoon yesterday in Memramcook.

Police say a man tried to grab the girl from behind but she mananaged to break free and run for help.

The suspect, who was wearing a black hoody, is described as being slim and of medium height.

Gas Prices Today St.Stephen & Calais

Not much of a change with gas prices after the weekly setting. Self Serve Regular has gone up just slightly, under a penny, to 98.9 cents a litre.

 Diesel is also higher at 101.1 a litre. Propane, meantime, is less expensive falling to 99.6 cents.

Meanwhile if you headed to Calias gas will only cot you .76 cents per litre.

Point Lepreu Near Completion

NB Power says the refurbishment of its Point Lepreau nuclear generating station is about 75 per cent complete, although some some leaks were found in the joints of new calandria tubes, they contain pressure tubes that hold the reactor's fuel bundles.

Atomic Energy of Canada has been conducting assessments and tests on a number of potential technical solutions in order to create tighter seal joints that meet operating standards.

B&E At St. Stephen Guardian

Local RCMP responded to an alarm activated at the Guardian drug store in St. Stephen to start the week out.. Upon arrival the police discovered the business had been broken into and the culprit had fled the scene with a quantity of methadone.

Through investigation the RCMP has identified a suspect in the break and enter, the investigation is continuing.

Lake Utopia Land Owners Hold Vote

A motion to form a Lake Utopia Association will be tabled at a charter meeting tonight at The St. Mark's Church in St. George. All landowners on the lake and the lower Magaguadavic River are encouraged to be in attendance.. The lake has been a great summer retreat for locals and property owners from all around the Atlantic Provinces, Ontario, and the States.

Algae bloom in the recent years have raised cause for concern from locals and the health of their lake.

The meeting is set to get underway at 6:30 tonight.

John Ernest (Jack) Irving

John Ernest (Jack) Irving, C.M., D.Litt., LL.D., was born on January 1, 1932 in Saint John, New Brunswick to Kenneth Colin Irving and Harriet Lila “née MacNarin” Irving.

John E. Irving is a Member of the Order of Canada, a Companion of the Order of The Business Hall of Fame, an inaugural member of the New Brunswick Business Hall of Fame, recipient of an Honourary Doctorate of Letters from the University of New Brunswick, recipient of an Honourary Doctorate in Civil Laws from Acadia University and is an Alumnus Honoris Causa of Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration, Boston, MA. He graduated from Rothesay Collegiate School, Rothesay, NB in 1950 and attended Acadia University, Wolfville, NS from 1950 to 1952.

In 1952 at his father’s request he joined his father’s businesses and he worked all his life, along-side his brother Arthur in Irving Oil. In addition, John E. Irving was a Director of all Irving businesses and was responsible for and managed a number of the companies within the varied Irving enterprises.

He is survived by his wife Suzanne Heather Cameron “née Farrer”, his children John Keillor Farrer Irving, Colin Dargarvel Irving, Anne Cameron I. Oxley and six grandchildren.

He died after a short illness on July 21, 2010. Visitation will be held at Trinity Anglican Church, 115 Charlotte Street, Saint John, NB on Friday July 23, 2010, from 2:00 pm until 8:00 pm. The funeral service will be conducted at Trinity Anglican Church at 11:00 am on Saturday July 24, 2010. A private family interment is to take place at a later time.

Arrangements are under the care of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (506-634-7424). In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation or the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation.

Jack Irving Has Passed Away

The Irving family is mourning the loss of a member today. John Ernest Jack Irving has passed away following a short illness. Born on January.1st. 1932, Irving was the chairman of the board of Ocean Capital Investments which is the parent company of Acadia and Northwoods broadcasting. Irving has been decorated with many recognitions over his life-time and career including a member of the Order of Canada, a member of the New Brunswick Hall of Fame and held an honourary doctorate in civil laws from Acadia University.

Irving worked all his life with Irving Oil first joining the company in 1952. Vistation will be held at Trinity Anglican Church on Charlotte Street, Friday between two in the afternoon and eight in the evening. The funeral will be held the following day, also at the Trinity Anglican Church at eleven o'clock.

The caller will identify himself or herself as a employee of Bell Mobility and even give you an employee number and a return contact number. The caller will offer you a deal on a LG Rumour phone and all you have to do is give your Social Insurance Number or the last 4 digits of a major Credit Card.

Tide News Spoke Public Affairs Manager with Bell Alliant Allison Queen and she tell us that this is not an Aliant campaign. Queen reminds everyone they will never ask anyone for thier persoal over the phone and if you recieve a call that your not sure about call Bell or your local authorities.

Local RCMP would like to remind the public to be extremely cautious if a caller asks you for personal information over the phone, do not give it. If the caller says act now, they’re doing you a favour, refuse immediately, you are not obligated. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Wood and Wardrobe Fire Update

The Wood and Wardrobe Store will be returning to their former location at 6 king street in St. Stephen. That from Manager Tammy Parks of the St Croix Volunteer Center & Wood and Wardrobe. Cleanup has now begun at the The wood and wardrobe which was gutted by fire back on May 23rd.

The center is still waiting on Insurance although there will not be enough insurance money to complete all repairs. Fundraiser are being planed as well as the Center is in the process of getting their Charitable Status.

Parks tells Tide News they are focusing on the downstairs store front area that will allow them to reopen at their former location

"Go Riding" TV Show Is In Province

The "Go Riding" TV show and magazine are touring ATV trails in the Province starting today in Moncton.

The tour with the Province's A-T-V Federation also includes stop in Sussex this week and in Fredericton.

Jacques Poirier of the A-T-V Federation says in 2005, a national survey found the A-T-V industry in the Province brings in 50 million dollars a year.

Twinning OF The Highway From Waweig to Lepreau

A sod turning event was held this morning for the twinning of the Number one Highway with Transportation Minister Denis Landry, New Brunswick Southwest MP Greg Thompson and and the project manager, for Dexter Construction participated in a groundbreaking ceremony in St. George along with MLA for Charlotte The Isles Rick Doucet

Doucet tells Tide News this has been a long time in the making and this is the single largest highway project that the Province has seen and probably will ever see. It will be great for business and tourism

Doucet say people whom are looking for places to live will find it allot easier from the outside area that may want to move to places along the coast. Estimated time of completion for this project is 41 months to date.

This new infrastructure between Waweig and Lepreau, along with other major upgrades will help create 900 new jobs.

Investment In Skateboard Park

Fisheries Minister Rick Doucet made the announcement that provincial government is investing in the skateboard park in St. George.

Doucet spoke on behalf of Business New Brunswick Minister Victor Boudreau, who is also the minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation.

The provincial government is investing $67,000 in the project.

Maine Lakes Experience Early Problems

Several Maine lakes, from York to Aroostook Counties, are turning green this year according to the Maine Department of Environmental Protection.

Reports have come in to DEP about problems ranging from gooey thread-like masses of growth near the shore that typically last a few days, to lake-wide pea-green conditions that last weeks or months.

 Biologist Roy Bouchard says the early thaw and warm water temperatures accelerate lake biology that results in the build up in nutrients and sediment and bloom with the right weather conditions.

Counterfit Money

Funny money is on the loose in the Port City of Saint John and the police Fraud section wants you to be aware of it. This time fake C-notes are being circulated.
The one-hundred dollar bills have the holographic strip from a ten dollar bill attached to them. The money is from the Canadian Journey Series from 2004. Police say built-in security features should help you indentify which bills are real.

They include the raised surfaces on the money, tilting the bill to look for the changing colours from the holographic strip.

You can also look for the fine-line printing in the portrait and background patterns.

Green Party Deadline

 There is still time for you to be a Green party candidate in the riding of Charlotte-Campobello for the upcoming fall vote.

The deadline to file nomination papers is Friday at midnight.The Province's Greens are holding a nomination meeting for Charlotte–Campobello on Monday.

Janice Harvey of Waweig will be seeking the nomination. Green Party leader Jack MacDougall will be the guest speaker.

Marketing and Sales Manager for Enbridge Gas Robin Hawkes tells Tide News The St. Stephen Summer Musical Concert Series is a staple to the community that would not be possible without the support from local businesses and the community.

Employees will be at the St. Stephen Town Square, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., volunteering their time and handing out items to concert goers.

Floor Plans Unveiled For New Dialysis Unit

Area residents had their first look at a planned satellite dialysis unit for the Charlotte County Hospital .

The floor plans were unveiled at the hospital by Health Minister Mary Schryer and officials from the Horizon Health Network.

The unit will feature five hemodialysis stations operating 12 hours per day, three days a week, with a capacity to serve 10 patients. The construction contract was awarded to Avondale Construction Ltd. The unit is expected to be in operation in early 2011.

The Charlotte County Hospital Foundation is thrilled to have assisted with the establishment of a satellite dialysis unit in St. Stephen," said Steven Backman, president, Charlotte County Hospital Foundation. "This new unit is truly terrific news for the hospital and the residents of Charlotte County."

Moose Draw Results

Hunters who entered the moose license draw can now find out if they got a license for this fall's draw.

The province received 62,900 applications for 3,554 licences with the 2010 moose hunting season coming up in September.

Callers will be asked to enter their provincial medicare number using the telephone keypad and if you are checking online, you need to enter your medicare number into the required field before you find out if you are successful in the draw.

Validation stickers will be sent to all successful applicants.

Collision With Moose Near Welsford Leaves One Man Dead

A 66 year old unidentified man has been killed after his car collided with a moose along highway 7 near Welsford late last night. Two passengers were taken to hospital.

One suffered just minor injuries. The other sustained what are described by the RCMP as serious injuries. They were all wearing their seatbelts and alcohol was not a factor and the road was wet at the time.

The new Calais Regional Hospital Sleep Center is equipped to diagnose a wide range of breathing disorders and other conditions experienced during sleep.

Estimates indicate that as many as 65 million Americans experience sleep disorders, at the Sleep Center of Calais Regional Hospital, patients spend a night where they are monitored for sleep apnea and other disorders.

The new service includes state of the art monitoring and diagnostic equipment and a trained technician in a comfortable setting with a sleep number bed.

Shellfish-Closure

There has been an outbreak of paralytic shellfish poisoning in our area. That has prompted the recreational and commercial harvesting of oysters, clams and scallops in the southwestern part of the province to be banned.

Closed are the foreshore and waters within 1.6 km of Southern New Brunswick from the Nova Scotia border along the coast of New Brunswick to the United States border and the foreshore and waters within 1.6 km of the Islands of Grand Manan, The Wolves, Bliss, Hills, Frye, Deer and Campobello.

The federal Fisheries Department says the outbreak is caused by naturally occurring toxins derived from plankton.

Man Arrested In Connection To Legion Arson Oromocto

An RCMP investigative unit have arrested an 18-year-old man as a result of the ongoing investigation into the arson that destroyed the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch in Oromocto back on June 10.

He is scheduled to appear in Burton Provincial Court on September 13 to enter his plea on charges of arson.

Meet Bizarre Ocean Creatures at Huntsman Marine This Weekend

The Atlantic Reference Centre, part of the Huntsman Marine Science Centre, has the world’s biggest collection of North Atlantic marine species.
ARC Curator of Invertebrates, Dr. Gerhard Pohle, and Curator of Fishes, Lou Van Guelpen, will be bringing along some unusual and fascinating specimens from fish to crustaceans and parasites on Saturday, July 10 at 11:30 a.m., right after the seal feeding, as they present Bizarre Creatures of the Deep.

The scientists will be talking about how some invertebrates and fish have adapted to the deep-sea environment, and visitors will be able to see and touch some of the specimens.

The Huntsman aquarium has lowered admission prices in 2010 as construction continues on the new discovery centre, set to open in June, 2011.

Street Reopened In Milltown After a Gas Leak Scare

A scare for some residents in Milltown today as workers struck a natural gas pipeline and the area was temporarily evacuated. Residents are back in their homes and the problem was resolved at approx. 1:00 pm. One resident in the area tells Tide News that the RCMP, St Stephen Fire Dept. along with the Towns Public Works Dept were on scene. 

Governor Orders Flags Flown At Half-Staff On Thursday

In remembrance and honor of Staff Sergeant Eric Shaw, Governor John E. Baldacci has directed that the United States flag and the State of Maine flag be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Thursday July 8. Staff Sergeant Shaw was killed by enemy gunfire in Afghanistan on June 27.
The funeral service for Staff Sergeant Shaw is scheduled for July 8 at the Plummer Funeral Home in Augusta with a graveside service to follow at the Maine Veterans Cemetery.

Atlanticade Being Hailed A Huge Success

The weather has been perfect for this weekend's Atlanticade Motorcycle Festival being held in Charlotte County. Thousands of bike enthusiasts roared into the area on Friday and have been enjoying the sites and sounds every since.

Organizer Dale Hicks tells Tide News, close to ten thousand bikes from around Atlantic Canada and beyond are in the area. This is also a great boost for the economy this weekend and hopefully in return visits.

Premier Graham On Second Reactor

Cautious optimism from Premier Graham concerning a proposal to build a second reactor at Point Lepreau.

Energy Minister Jack Keir met with officials from Areva to explore the possibilities last week and Graham tells Tide News, it's vital the private sector take on the risk and not the rate-payer.


Premier Graham says the next step in the process now is to see if a letter of intent can be signed.

Atlanticade may top ten thousand
