Missing Moncton Man

Codiac Regional RCMP is releasing a new photo of 44-year-old Fred Byram of Sainte-Anne-de-Madawaska, N.B., who has been missing for almost two weeks.

Mr. Byram was last seen around midnight on Thursday, October 7 as he was taking a taxi at the Rocking Rodeo on Elmwood Drive in Moncton. Mr. Byram has not been in contact with any of his family or friends since then. This is out of character for him.

Mr. Byram is 5'10 tall, weighs 170 lbs, has brown eyes and salt and pepper hair, and was last seen wearing a white T-shirt and blue jeans. He has tattoos on his arms and a gap between his upper front teeth. At the time of his disappearance, he had a few days of facial hair growth.

RCMP Seize Three Kilos Of Cocaine In Moncton

 RCMP taking three kilos of Cocaine off the streets in Moncton after a drug bust at a bus terminal last week in Moncton.

Shane Gibbons from  Toronto man was arrested in connection with the seizure, and charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Gibbons has been remanded for a bail hearing, and is scheduled to appear in Moncton provincial court on October 22.

Lining Up Candidates for Campobello

With just weeks to go before the ballot boxes are brought out, the list of candidates in the rural community of Campobello Island is slim. Only one person has put their name forward, Terrence Preston for ward councillor.

David Owens is the Assistant Electoral Officer and tells us , he isn't concerned about the turn-out. The nomination closes on October 22 at 2 PM.

Owens adds if no one throws their hat into the ring so to speak, Elections NB then contacts the Department of Local Government and holds a round of by-elections in May. The election is scheduled for November.15th.

Flu Vaccination For 2010 Season

Seasonal flu shots are now available across the Province and the  the deputy chief medical officer of health is urging everyone to get one.
 
Dr. Paul Van Buynder says the 2010 vaccine will protect against three strains of the flu, including H-1-N-1.
 
It's free to adults with chronic health conditions, pregnant women, seniors, children and residents of nursing homes or special care homes.

Buynder shows a sample of a poster that will be used in a public awareness campaign about the importance of flu vaccination.

Garbage Pick Up

FERO Waste & Recycling Inc. is under contract to The Town of St. Stephen for residential garbage collection.  The agreed collection day is Tuesday and any change in day is subject to Town approval.  However, FERO unilaterally gave notice of change in the Milltown Heights area for pick up on Mondays.

This change is not authorized by the Town and FERO has been notified that the Tuesday pick up day must be continued.

Residents are advised that the Town will make the necessary arrangements to ensure garbage is collected on Tuesdays.

Active Living Week for Seniors in New Brunswick

Seniors are encouraged to participate in Active Living Week its started today and will continue to Saturday. 

 To mark the week, the Senior and Healthy Aging Secretariat will be distributing new information sheets covering such topics as the aging process, older drivers, fall prevention, tobacco-free living, and medication use.

 This information will be available at regional offices of the Department of Social Development and through the Senior and Healthy Aging Secretariat at  457-6811 or by email   seniors@gnb.ca.

Historic Day For Campobello

An historic day is just weeks away for Campobello Island. As of November.1st, the rural community will be incorporated.

The new set-up is very similar to a municipality and among other things means there will be an elected council and mayor.

Residents of Campobello Island will elect a council for the first time on Nov. 15.

A-T-V Fatality

The RCMP in St. George reporting a 22 year old man from Campobello is dead after an A-T-V crash over the weekend in Utopia.

Police say the A-T-V left the road and the driver was thrown off the vehicle.  Alcohol is believed to have been a factor and the name of the victim has not been released.

Blood Donor Clinic Moved

Due to the water line breakage Fundy High School is closed, the Blood Donor Clinic scheduled for today will be relocated to the Community Centre located on J.O Spinny Ave .

Fire At Irving Pulp And Paper

Nobody hurt after a fire at Irving Pulp and paper late yesterday afternoon.

Saint John crews arrived just after 5:30pm at the West-Side mill to find a smoldering blaze under the skirting of a training trailer.


The flames were quickly brought under control and no word on how much damage was caused.

Energy Commission Member Speaks Out

The Premier's new Energy Commission wants to hear from as many people as possible as it spends the next six months cobbling together a new energy policy for the province.

So claims one of the better known members of that Commission, the former Minister of Energy and Finance, Jennot Volpe.

He tells Tide News there's one key question on his mind going in and that is how can the Province be more efficient in producing power and set up the best model for both the Province and rate-payers.



Volpe is confident the problem of NB Power's debtload can be overcome. He maintains it was worse back in the early 90's after Belledune was built.

Looking To Settle Car Rental Dispute

Former Saint John Fundy M-L-A Stuart Jamieson says it's been a thorne in his side -- now -- it appears the province is trying to find a solution.



Jamieson tells Tide News car rental agencies have been using vehicles registered in Nova Scotia translating to a loss of revenue for the province.


A spokesperson for the Department of Public Safety tells us the province is confident a solution similar to what's in place for commercial vehicles will work -- that system sees the commercial vehicles registered in one jurisdiction with the registration revenues shared between provinces and states based on actual miles travelled in each jurisdiction based on company records.

Storm Conditions Cause Power Outages

Police are cautioning motorists to be a little more careful  on the way home this afternoon.

The wind and rain combined with the falling leaves are making for some slick driving conditions.

RCMP say the possibility of hydroplaning is high with the water on the road and around town some storm drains have become clogged with leaves causing water to build up.

NB Power crews crews have been busy trying to restore  Power to Tower Hill, Saint Andrews, Blacks Harbour and Pennfield. They do tell us they expected to have power restored by later tonight.

Great Canadian Dollar Store Opens For Business

The newest store in St. Stephen opened it's door this morning at 9 AM. The Great Canadian Dollar store has moved into the Old NB Liquor location beside the St. Stephen Superstore.

This morning locals braved the wet and windy weather as they lined up outside to to be the first thru the doors.

The store will operate from 9 Am to 9 PM Monday to Friday, Saturday store hours will be 9 to 5.

Rainfall warning for St. Stephen and Northern Charlotte County

Periods of rain at times heavy will give in between 50 and 75 millimetres today and Saturday.

An intensifying low pressure system south of New England will stall over the gulf of Maine later today.

Rain at times heavy will begin over Southwestern New Brunswick later this morning then spread northeastward across the province during the day.

Rain will ease off for a time this evening then redevelop overnight and persist over Southwestern New Brunswick on Saturday.

Total rainfall amounts of between 50 and 75 millimetres is possible for Extreme Southwestern New Brunswick. 

Deer Island Ferry Update

The Department of Transportation district officials in Saint John now advise that the Deer Island Ferry service will operate under normal circumstances with two vessels running between tomorrow until Monday.

Deer Island Ferry Schedule 1

For anyone that uses the Deer Island Ferry, here is notice that the wait to use the service could get longer starting tomorrow. There will only be one vessel on the water starting tomorrow until Sunday.

The Deer Island Princess II ferry, which has a capacity of 24 cars, will be operational and shuttle back and forth between six in the morning and 10:30pm every night.

Boil Order For Blacks Harbour

Residents who reside from 183 to 232  on Main Street in  Black Harbour and residents of Beaver Harbour who are on Connor's Brothers water supply are on a boil water order today.  This is due to a water main break.

Water used for brushing teeth, making ice, juice, coffee, tea or cooking with should be boiled for at least one minute prior to use.

The Public Works Department tells us you may bath in the water and and it's safe to wash your dishes in hot soapy water. with the story slug.

Stolen Lobster Traps

Sometime last night a lobster fisherman from Campobello, discovered a theft of his lobster traps, which had been secured on a skow, anchored at Head Harbour were stolen.

There were about  90 traps at  about $40 dollars each. Anyone having any information concerning this theft are requested to contact the Campobello RCMP at 752-2211 or 466-7030 or Crime Stoppers at 1 800 222-8477. 

Anyone providing information will remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash award, should the information provided lead to the arrest of the person(s) responsible for this theft."

Governor Signs Executive Order to Support School-Based Flu Vaccination Clinics

Governor John E. Baldacci has signed an Executive Order that will help to facilitate school-based vaccination clinics in Maine.

The Executive Order protects school districts and other vaccination clinic participants from liability and  from liability for approved health care workers who administer the flu vaccines. The Executive Order shall expire on February 28, 2011
