Saint John women dies in car crash

District 3 RCMP responded to a fatal motor vehicle collision on Highway 1 in Hammond River yesterday that has left one women dead. The collision occurred when the vehicle entered the median and subsequently rolled over. The driver, a 46 year old woman from Saint John was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene as a result of her injuries. Weather conditions were clear and the roadway was dry at the time of the incident. The collision remains under investigation. The victims name is not being released pending notification of next of kin.

Accident on Highway one

The Musquash Fire Department responded today around 3 pm to a accident that occurred on Route 790 between Highway 1 and the Lepreau Village Road. A car and a pick up truck collided head on - the driver of one vehicle had to be cut out of this car using hydraulic extrication tools. Both drivers were transported to hospital for treatment. Firefighters closed the stretch of roadway to all traffic while working at the scene and until the vehicles were removed from the ditch.

Cold case Hit and Run Petit-Rocher

Crime Stoppers and the B.N.P.P. Regional Police Force are looking into a cold case file for information on a hit and run causing death in Petit-Rocher, N.B. more than 25 years ago.On December 15, 1983, at approximately 1 a.m., the B.N.P.P. responded to a hit and run call on Highway 134 in Petit-Rocher North. Officers arrived on the scene to find 20-year-old Lévio Roy lying on the side of the road severely injured. Lévio Roy later died in hospital from injuries sustained in the hit and run. Police believe there is someone who has information that could help solve this case of hit and run causing death. Anyone with any information is asked to call N.B.Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). If your information leads to an arrest, you qualify for a cash award of up to $2,000.

Liberal Nominating Convention

Premier Shawn Graham in the Border Town Tomorrow to be be in attendance for The The Liberal riding association for Charlotte-Campobello nominating convention. Registration gets under way at noon with the meeting set to begin at 2:00. Three local canidates to run today Annabelle Juneau, Ralph Williams and Dave Ganong.

The event will take place at St. Stephen High School.

Lake Utopia Steering Committee Seeks New Members...

Recently a group concerned resident came together to form a Steering Committee to lay out the ground work for a for the formation of the Lake Utopia Resident's Association. The health of the Lake has been an ongoing issue with the blue green algae blooms leaving residents to wonder what the potential health risks are to human and aquatic life.

The Department Of Environment is yet to find the cause of the algae bloom but have conducted several investigative studies. In the coming months the committee is looking for new members to join and represent the diverse interests and demographic group. Executive Director of Eastern Waterway and a member of the Steering Committee says residents have been vocal about conditions of the lake.

Mersereau tell us the formation of the Lake association presents an opportunity to harness energy from residents and to address the issues at hand through increased access to policy making, industrial stakeholders and sources of funding...

More Jobs for Maine with New Funding

Governor John E. Baldacci announced details of a $79 million investment package that will create almost 2000 jobs in the State of Maine.

The Governor’s job creation bond package focuses heavily on transportation. $28 million for highway reconstruction and paving, creating an estimated 750 jobs. Three million will be set aside for the municipal highway challenge grant, which will be matched by local dollars and create an estimated 80 jobs.

In addition, the bond package includes $17 million for environmental and energy projects.....$5 million of that to support component manufacturing for wind energy generation at the University of Maine.

New Standard Offer's Contract to lower rates in Maine

Eastern Maine Electric Cooperative has good economic news for its members in Eastern and Northern Maine. The cost of electricity supply will drop on all electricity used starting April 1st, when a new Standard Offer supply contract will begin. The first year of the new three-year contract, awarded to NB Power of Fredericton.
The new rate will result in a decrease of approximately 10% in the total residential electric bill and a 19% decrease in the standard offer supply portion of the bill.

Acadian Coach Lines Info Session set for Tuesday

A Public Information Session will be held tuesday on the proposal to discontinue service between Saint John and Bangor. The proposal would result in the termination of bus service in Pennfield, St. George, St. Andrews and St. Stephen. The meeting gets underway at 5:30 at The Milltown Legion with Reps from Acadian Coach Lines on hand....

Peewee Provicial Hockey Championship held in St. Stephen

The local St. Stephen hockey peewee A hockey team Moffitt Dodge Storm is very excited to be hosting the provincial championships on the weekend of March 26th to 28th.

The team will be playing in four round robin games - noon and 6:00 on both Friday and Saturday. As well, the final game will be on Sunday morning. The 6:00 game on Friday will be the opening ceremonies and we're encouraging all local hockey players to wear their jerseys, show their team spirit, and get in free. As well for Friday's noon game the first 50 people wearing green and white will get a free candy bag.

NBCC Explosion sends Instructor and Student to Hospital

Two people taken to hospital Wednesday evening after an explosion at NBCC in Saint Andrews. This incident took place during a scheduled Training activity for the Hospitaility and Toursim program. Principal Terry Dempsey tells Tide News the Instruction has been transported to the Saint John Regional for further assessment and the student is expected to be released from the Charlotte County Hospital today.

Dempsey tells us this is a very unfortunate incident that occurred, in spite of all the experience and safety precautions.

WorkSafe NB is conducting an investigation. The cause has yet to be determined.

Reward offered for information on Donna O'Rielly

There's a reward being offered by the family of Donna O'Rielly. The 54-year-old woman hasn't been seen since February 26th when she left the Highfield Square Mall in Moncton after work for her car in the parking lot which was left untouched.

Her daughter says the family hopes the reward of  25-thousand-dollar will lead someone to come forward with new information leading to O'Rielly.

Gas Prises On The Rise

Self serve regular has gone up a bit in price after the weekly setting. The maximum that can be charged is 105.7. No change this week in the maximum price for diesel. Furnace Oil is up slightly at 90.7 and another decline in the price of propane which is at 110.3 a litre. Meanwhile Cross Border Gas is being sold at .79 cents per Litre.

C.H.E.P Borderless Giving

St. Stephen's University, New Brunswick Community College St. Andrew's Campus, and Washington County Community College, are partnering together for a fund-raising event on March 26th.
These schools have recently formed a partnership called C.H.E.P (Crossborder Higher Education Partnership) and our first major student life initiative will be a multi-community foodbank food drive on both sides of the border.

On March 26th students from all schools will participate in a number of fund-raising activities from 9am-9pm 
Students will be going door-to-door collecting spare change and food donations from 2-4PM and again from 6-7:30PM. Students will also be stationed around town at different drop-off centres collecting money and food donations.

New science centre designs unveiled for Huntsman Marine

The new discovery centre at the Huntsman Marine Science Centre moved one step closer this week with some new designs created by Comeau MacKenzie Architects.
Construction of the new facility, which will include a new aquarium, theatre, classrooms and a lab, will begin in the spring, with the aquarium set to open in June 2011.The cost of the new centre is $8 million, with $5 million of that contributed from the federal and provincial governments, and the remainder being raised by the Huntsman. With $1 million already raised through previous fund-raising, the Seal the Deal campaign was launched in October to find the additional $2 million needed. That campaign has already reached the $600,000 mark, and efforts to reach the goal are ongoing.

The designs for the 20,000 square-feet, two-storey building are still subject to some minor changes prior to construction beginning, the start of which will be the tear down of the old aquarium in mid-March. The old aquarium was opened in 1972. There will be a temporary aquarium at the Huntsman for the 2010 season, with the main attractions of the lobsters, harbour seals Loki and Snorkel, the sturgeon and the touch pool all available for visitors to see.

 

Service New Brunswick centre to reopen in Campobello

The seasonal Service New Brunswick centre on Campobello Island will reopen on Tuesday, March 9. It will be open every Tuesday until May 18.

The centre will be at the tourist information centre at 44, Route 774 in Welshpool. Office hours will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with the office closed for lunch from noon to 1 p.m.

Urgent Need for Volunteer Drivers in Charlotte County

The ability to utilize affordable and accessible transportation is critical to quality of life issues especially for people living in rural communities. In Charlotte County, as well as in many other communities in N.B, many individuals simply do not drive, do not have a vehicle or access to a vehicle, and can’t afford to hire a transportation service when needed.The Charlotte County Alternative Transportation Association  http://www.charlottedialaride.com/ a registered charity, has been addressing this problem since Sept., 2005.We coordinate drive appointments 

between the members needing this service, and our greatly-valued volunteer drivers. Members pay a small
yearly membership fee and modest fees for the drives based on the distance they need to travel. For example a one way drive from a member’s home to his or her destination; if it is less than 21 km, costs $4.00. We are
currently helping 120 people; the drive requests are increasing so the number of drivers needs to increase as well.

Our volunteers use their own vehicles and donate their time to provide this service to those with no access to transportation. They are compensated only for gas at .30 per km. Our volunteers are our means of operating and we desperately need more!

We are currently helping 120 people and especially need more drivers in the St. Stephen, St.George, and Blacks Harbour areas, as these are areas that have frequent drive requests.

Drives are always by appointment, and are Monday- Friday between 9 am and 5 pm. Drives are sometimes very short.- eg dropping someone off at work while you are on your way to work. Volunteers are always asked if they are available to carry out a drive request. Volunteers are welcome to join us, even if availability is limited.

Donna O'Rielly Still Missing




Provincial Police have asked their P.E.I. counterparts to be on the alert in case a missing Moncton woman shows up on the Island.

Charlottetown deputy Chief Gary McGuigan confirms his department received an advisory from Moncton with a photo of Donna O'Rielly.

O'Rielly, 54, disappeared last Friday.

She was last seen leaving her job at a Moncton shopping mall around 8 p.m.

Security cameras show her leaving the mall but she did not make it to the car she drove to work.

Family members, many of them in Newfoundland and Labrador, believe O'Rielly is still alive.

Low Income Senior's get Raise in Allowance

A seniors' group is happy the province is keeping its word by raising the low-income seniors' allowance to 400-dollars.
But the Senior Citizens Federation still wants the government to improve coverage of diabetic testing supplies for older people.

The Department of Health said yesterday the province invested about six (m) million dollars a year in 2008-09 to support access to diabetes medication for close to 15-thousand people.

That coverage was provided to groups including low-income seniors and residents of nursing homes.
